Guided Meditation and Chatting To Your Higher Self

The benefits of guided meditation were brought home to me very powerfully the other day.

I was working on some technical stuff for my website and things were NOT going well. I was becoming very stressed out.

Following the law of attraction perfectly my mind threw up a whole number of other things for me to think about that would bring me more stress.

Very soon, I was in quite a state of panic, imagining all sorts of dreadful things happening in my future if things went along in some highly negative illusory way. I knew I needed to raise my vibration, but I was not doing very well with trying to access better feeling thoughts.

So, I put everything down, put on a guided meditation CD called The Daily Dose by Kathy Freston and went and lay down on my bed.

I knew that there was no way I would be able to completely clear my mind, I was too muddled, too panicked. I thought that a guided meditation where I could keep bringing my attention back to a voice on a CD and do some positive visualizations would be the best thing.

I was in such a state that I could barely hear Kathy's voice at first. I started doing very deep breathing. Breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth loudly. The sound of my breath filled the room and drowned out the guided meditation CD in the background.

I had my hands over my stomach, doing deep tummy breaths and feeling the rise and fall of my stomach. Within the first few breaths the most amazing thing happened.

I felt suffused with love and wellbeing!

It was so powerful and the relief was so great, in comparison to how I was feeling before, that my eyes just gushed tears.

For a few moments it was as if I was so much more than just me. I felt such a wonderful feeling of oneness with spirit and the sense of joy and gratitude throughout my being was immense.

Unfortunately, I immediately brought myself down by thinking ‘wow this is so cool, I must do this again, I need to schedule meditations on a daily basis, why haven’t I been doing this every day? When am I going to fit them in, in the mornings or the evenings?’ And of course, that focus back into time and mind ‘problems’ brought me out of that state of immense wellbeing.

I let those thoughts go and brought my attention back to my breath and though the feeling had lessened in intensity it remained with me. Tears continued to leak out of my eyes for the duration of the meditation but I also could barely stop smiling.

I released all scheduling, planning, worry type thoughts as soon as they came to me by bringing my attention back to my breathing and also to Kathy’s voice and did the visualizations she described.

At the end of the 20 minute guided meditation I felt like a new woman!

I went out for a 30 minute bike ride and was singing along at the top of my lungs to Snow Patrol’s ‘Chasing Cars’ on my ipod, much to the bemused stares of all the construction workers I passed who were waiting for their buses home.

I realized that for the past couple of months, I have not been making time for meditations. It doesn’t take a lot of time! Yet, I just hadn’t been making it a priority!

I realized yesterday how much I need it. The benefits of meditation are enormous. Sometimes it is the only time of the day where we actually get out of our own heads, let go of the incessant thoughts and just BE!

I have been reading Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now and this book is amazing. It is a book that I plan to read multiple times as there is just so much to grasp in there.

If we are truly living in the moment, we have no problems, we have no worries.

The only reasons we ever worry is because our minds are time based and use our past experiences to project into an imaginary future.

If we can live fully in the now, we can experience our true state, which is joy, peace, love, compassion, gratitude, all the time.

It is only ever from projecting our consciousness into the past or the future that we make ourselves unhappy, and that unhappiness is simply resistance to who we really are, our true selves.

The incredible feeling I had during my meditation yesterday was simply my connection with who I really am. I was for that moment, FULLY IN THE MOMENT, and was able to experience that incredible joy of being. I want that feeling back! I want that feeling always. I generally feel pretty good, pretty happy, but that was just spectacular.

If you have struggled with meditation or just need some easy meditation techniques, then try a guided meditation CD, I love Kathy Freston's guided meditation CD's. I also really enjoy Kelly Howell's CD’s. Kelly Howell has some guided meditation CD’s as well as just some meditation music. Just having the music in the background also provides something to focus on, so it is easier to stay present.

Easy Meditation Techniques - Higher Self Meditation

I did a meditation this morning where I went and had a chat with my higher self. This is an easy meditation technique based on one from Erin Pavlina's blog. This is what I do.

I imagine myself getting into an elevator. I go up to the 21st floor. I watch the elevator screen light up with each number as I pass each floor, so I’m counting up all the way to 21. I come out of the elevator and I see a flight of stairs. I climb up 21 stairs.

This leads me to a long corridor, like a long hotel corridor. All along the one side of the corridor are room numbers starting at 1. I walk past each room number until I reach room 21. I open the door.

And then my imagination throws up whatever it wants to throw up. The first time I visited this room it was very businesslike, just like a lawyers office. And there was my higher self complete with business suit and....clipboard (who knows?).

This room has massive windows overlooking the ocean and it is beautiful and tranquil. When I went there this morning the room was very comfortably furnished with big comfortable armchairs with very soft cream fabric and enormous cushions.

And this time my higher self had flowers in her hair and a long loose caftan in cream with red flowers painted on it. She was all hippy and flowery this time (no clipboards in sight).

Whenever I have visited one thing is constant, she is always wonderful to me. She encourages me, tells me how wonderfully well I’m doing, gives me some solid advice and encouragement about what to do next, and tells me how much I am loved.

There is never any hint of criticism, any hint of reproach, it is pure positive loving energy. Once I’m done chatting with my higher self, she gives me a big hug and then I’m off, counting down the rooms as I pass, from 21 down to 1, down the 21 steps, into the lift and down the 21 floors, and then I’m done. Refreshed, revitalized, energized and full of inspired ideas.
